From 29 April to 3 September, Mu.ZEE and Moussem presented Trans-Architecture: Performing Power Figures, a solo-presentation of Roland Gunst (also known as John K Cobra). The exhibition marked the final edition of the Enter series, programmed by the museum in Ostend, Belgium.
John K Cobra showed an ensemble of artworks exploring his theory around trans-architecture and sites of memory. Using materials such as silicone and latex—referring to the material of kwanga (Afropean rubber)—the artist created sculptural and performative works that possessed the potential to grow and transform. In doing so, he formed a counterweight to rigid architectural structures and monuments made of stone and metal.
The Moussem-team is excited to share that Mu.ZEE has now purchased the video work Trans-Capital (2021), the sculpture Côlon #1_MA (2022) and the photograph Choréographie_GA (2023) as part of the museum's permanent collection, to be enjoyed by future audiences. We would like to congratulate John K Cobra, as well as Younes Baba-Ali and Randa Maroufi, whose works have previously been acquired by Mu.ZEE through collaborations with Moussem.
The exhibitions of all three artists took place as part of a broad collaboration between Moussem and several Flemish museums including Mu.ZEE and M HKA, titled MOUSSEM COLLECTION. Through this initiative Moussem partners with art museums in Belgium to present solo exhibitions, and purchase works of participating artists in co-ownership with the institutions, thereby contributing to a multitudinous cultural heritage.
