(if) we are the water

open studio Aya Koné

the foggara is an ancestral irrigation technology that moves water throughout arid regions. these systems were vast tunnels, dug by hand, beneath the sands of the desert.
after its long journey underground, the water collects at the kasira: a comb-like structure that directs the amassed water to flow towards their various destinations.

peoples in migration are often referred to in terms of water: ‘waves’, ‘floods’, ‘surges’ – we move fluidly. there is a malleability to our movements that stems from the ability to adapt to whichever space we enter. along those terms, however, inevitability and overwhelm are carried as well: stiff bureaucratic paper trails that calcify and crystallize into forms of rigidity. measuring systems accounting for what kind of box you are rather than how you fill out that space – how you move, where you are, what you contribute... perhaps a different kind of measuring can hold space if we are the water.

Join us on Thursday the 18th of June to discover Aya Koné’s first series of water works that explore themes of migration and translation resonating with the phrase ich bin nah am wasser gebaut. This open studio marks the end of her residency period at Moussem, framing within an exchange program with M Leuven. It forms through sculptural interventions that play on the pulled teeth of the kasira comb in earthen plaster, crystallized correspondence, vessels, leaks and translations.
