The evening at Espace Magh is organised as an extension of the literary event Marché de la Poésie in Paris. The 2025 edition is dedicated to Palestine. In Brussels, too, we are bringing together Palestinian poets from Gaza, in particular the voices of those who cherish hope and continue to echo the resistance against oppression. ‘May my death bring hope,’ wrote Refaat Alareer, a 43-year-old poet who was killed in an Israeli bombing on 6 December 2023.
Poetry is an act of resistance in a place where hope seems to have been wiped out. It is a lasting bastion against human degradation. Hend Jouda, Fatena al-Ghorra, Nour Baaloucha and Wadah Abu Jami bear witness in their poems to the struggle in Gaza and the resilience of their people. They are among the poets included in the anthology GAZA, Y a-t-il une vie avant la mort (published by Points, April 2025). In Espace Magh, their words will be complemented by verses about Palestine by Dutch-language poet Charles Ducal. Palestinian clarinettist and jazz composer Ahmed Hawwash and guitarist Tom Peeters will accompany this sensitive evening.
Ismail Matar, a young Brussels artist from Gaza, combines calligraphy, painting and a fresco technique in his murals. His presentation is an extension of his paintings on the walls of the refugee camps in Gaza. Ismail has always wanted to portray the struggle and resilience of his people in an authentic way. His work is a universal language that can reach a wide audience and transcend borders.
GAZA, Is there life before death? will be a moving tribute, an evening dedicated to those who, despite the war and the Israeli occupation, continue to make the voice of their people heard.
When: Tuesday 24 June from 6 p.m.
Where: Espace Magh, Rue du Poinçon 17, 1000 Brussels
Ismail Matar's exhibition is open for free, without booking, from 25/06 to 10/07, Monday to Friday, 1pm to 5pm and on performance evenings.
