Moussem Cities Casablanca

01–28.02.2018

Once a year, for the Moussem Cities festival, Moussem Nomadic Arts Centre and its Brussels-based partners turn their gaze on an Arab metropolis. The cities chosen have a rich and culturally diverse history, but above all, their artistic dynamism means that they play a vital role in contemporary Arab societies. Artists from the region and from the diaspora offer you an insight into their city and their work through performances, concerts, films, exhibitions, and a literary evening.

Following festivals centred on Tunis and Beirut, we now invite you to discover Casablanca. In collaboration with local partners, we shall be engaging in dialogue with artists from Morocco’s largest city, a metropolis that continues to grow explosively (from a population of 20,000 in 1907 to more than 4 million today). It is also an important port city; a historical crossroads for the Arab world, Europe, Sub-Sahara and the overseas territories. For Moussem Cities: Casablanca, we shall be delighted to welcome you to the venues of our Brussels-based partners: Kaaitheater BOZAR, VK concerts, De Markten and the Le Space festival centre.

Alongside the artistic programme, the festival is also intended to engage fully in moments of encounter, connection, reflection and discussion. The different generations of prominent figures who help shape Casablanca’s arts scene contribute content and insights concerning the social and political context in which they live and work, concerning traditions and contemporary interpretations, and concerning the current events in our rapidly changing world.

This programme was realised in colaboration with BOZAR, Kaaitheater, VK concerts, De Markten and Le Space. Moussem is supported by the Flemish Government and the Flemish Community Commission.
