Open Studio Yara Boustany: mātri-phagía

mātri-phagía is a transformative rite that attempts to contain and assimilate the violence we are enduring in a visceral and embodied form. Impregnated with a turbulent reality, Yara Boustany uncovers beauty within the horrific, tracing enchanted maps that bridge the primal body with synthetic and digital realms.

Beirut — a city forever reshaping itself through cycles of turmoil — stands as a symbol of how societies wrestle with destruction and rebirth, a microcosm of a world at the brink of collapse, driven by wars, unchecked consumption, and exploitation.

Matriphagy, the act of offspring consuming their mother observed in certain spiders and insects, shows an extreme form of maternal care, where the mother willingly becomes nourishment for her young. Inspired by this phenomenon, the work explores the continuity of existence — an oscillation of ancestral experience from its quantum origins to the human form. Beirut becomes the mother, nurturing her progeny through cycles of devouring and renewal, her essence absorbed and transformed in a visceral, transformative dance.

practical information
For this open studio, you are cordially invited to join us into the emerging universe of mātri-phagía. Through fragments of choreography, elements of the movement language, images in projection, and parts of the evolving soundscape, Yara Boustany will share the very beginning of the piece as it is slowly taking form after a short residency period in Moussem.

The presentation will be followed by an informal conversation with Yara Boustany, who will speak about her artistic process and the ideas behind the project. We will then open the space for questions and discussion as we collectively deepen our understanding of the research that is unfolding.

when: Thursday March 26th 2026, 19:30 - doors 19:00
where: Moussem Studios, Rue du Chimiste 16 1070 Anderlecht
language: the presentation will be held in English, and questions are warmly welcome in Arabic and French as well, or Dutch.
