Ch'ttahh

Bilal El Had

In Ch’ttahh (‘dancer’), Bilal El Had turns to the first movement form he’s ever known: Moroccan chaabi, the popular dance and music played at weddings, street celebrations, and living room parties. The piece interweaves personal dance knowledge with the century-old rhythms, songs, and symbols of chaabi – investigating deeply social gestures that carry long histories of men defying gender norms through dance, poetry and music. Between tribute and innovation, humor and grievance, Ch’ttahh channels the explosivity of the present while allowing us to gaze lovingly to a collective past.
